On a 2-Year Contract New York Yankees Sign Former Player
The New York Yankees recently completed the signing of Tommy Kahnle to a two-year deal, marking a return to the organization he promoted from 2017-2020. The terms of Kahnle’s contract have not been disclosed, but his deal is said to be worth $11.5 million. Lucas Luetge was assigned the job of making room for Kahnle in the Yankees’ 40-man roster.
He rejoined the Yankees after spending the last two years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but only played in one of them. The Dodgers signed Kahnle to a two-year deal in December 2020 while he was still in the early stages of his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
The right-hander had hoped to play for the team at the end of the 2021 season, but the Dodgers played it safe. Before his return to the major leagues this year, Kahnle completed rehab assignments at Low-A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City. His Dodgers debut came on May 1 against the Detroit Tigers when Kahnle scored twice and gave up all three batters in. Kahnle appeared in four games in May before being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bone bruise in his right elbow.
The injury was believed to be related to Tommy John’s surgery and Kahnle was sidelined until mid-September. However, he turned out to be a viable late-inning option that was removed from the disabled list. Kahnle finished the 2022 season with a 2.84 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, 9th95 strikeouts per nine innings, and 2.13 walks per nine. While with the Yankees from 2017-2020, he went 6-3 with one save and a 4.01 ERA.

His best season was in 2017 when Kahnle had a 2.59 ERA, 1.83 FIP, and 1.12 WHIP with 96 strikeouts and 17 walks in 62.2 innings. In parts of eight seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2014–2015), the Chicago White Sox (2016–2017), the Yankees (2017–2020), and the Dodgers (2022), Kahnle is a combined 9-9 with five saves and one 3.78 ERA in 298 career appearances.
How will the Dodgers replace Tommy Kahnle? In addition to Kahnle, the Dodgers’ 2022 bullpen has also seen the departures of Craig Kimbrel and Chris Martin. Jimmy Nelson remains a free agent, as does David Price, but is not expected to serve next season. The Dodgers will appear to be replacing Kahnle with their inside options and have also added Shelby Miller to add depth.
