Red Sox top prospect Triston Casas is back working out with the WooSox on Thursday and expected to be in Worcester’s lineup this weekend when the team hosts Syracuse, a source confirmed Thursday morning. Casas’ return to Triple-A was first reported by The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
Casas last played a Triple-A game on May 17 before missing two months with a high ankle sprain. Initially, the Red Sox hoped he would only miss a couple of weeks with the injury but it ended up taking much longer. Casas spent weeks working out at the team’s spring training complex in Fort Myers and returned to game action in four rehab games for the Florida Complex League Red Sox beginning on July 12. He went 6-for-14 (.429) with a homer, three doubles and three walks in those games, last playing Saturday.
Casas, hit .248 with six homers, nine doubles and an .816 OPS in 36 games at Triple-A before being sidelined, was working his way toward a big-league call-up before hurting his ankle. He was consistently hitting the ball hard and playing solid defense at first base and put himself in position to be considered to play in the majors at some point over the summer. His two-month absence obviously delayed that timetable.
“The way he swung the bat last year, right, and with his progress in spring training, what we saw, a little bit of what we saw, you never know,” Sox manager Alex Cora said last weekend. “He’s not part of the conversation now because he’s hurt.”
Now that Casas is active again, he could play himself into consideration for the first base job in the majors once again. Boston’s two options, Bobby Dalbec and Franchy Cordero, have both been extremely inconsistent this year and struggled so far in July. Dalbec is hitting .205 with two homers, 20 strikeouts and a .689 OPS in 43 plate appearances this month. Cordero, who entered the All-Star break with 15 strikeouts in his last 16 at-bats, is 7-for-48 (.146) with 23 strikeouts in July.

The Red Sox are going to look for first base upgrades before the Aug. 2 trade deadline and have reportedly already engaged in talks with the Mets about change-of-scenery candidate Dominic Smith. Washington’s Josh Bell, Baltimore’s Trey Mancini and Kansas City’s Hunter Dozier are other potential targets. If Casas proves he’s fully healthy and close to major league ready, the Sox could theoretically choose to go with him at first and avoid making a trade addition from outside.
