Steph Curry is widely regarded as one of the all-time great point guards. Off the court, the Golden State Warriors player is known for his deep Christian faith as well as his impressive charity work, standing 6’2 tall.
Curry’s mother, Sonya, nearly aborted her child 34 years ago. This mother of three explained in her book, Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose, that she became pregnant again after having an abortion in high school.
According to a report in the Daily Citizen, she felt the Holy Spirit intervene as he was about to enter a Planned Parenthood clinic:
“God had a plan for that child,” she said. Wardell Stephen Curry II would not have existed if she had gone through that.
One could also argue that God had Sonya’s best interests at heart. The basketball player’s mother has now been able to share her story with many others, perhaps inspiring them to make difficult decisions in their own lives.
“I wrote Fierce Love to share my story, my testimony, and my experience so that others may find strength and purpose in their own journeys,” said Sonya on a statement published by People. “I want to encourage others to pray continuously, live intentionally, love fiercely, and laugh daily!”
Sonya Curry has three children with NBA star Dell Curry, including Stephen, Seth, and Sydel Curry-Lee, whom she divorced last year after 33 years of marriage. In addition to raising successful children, Sonya founded and ran the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in North Carolina, and she currently co-hosts the Raising Fame podcast.
In her book, she discusses all of these life experiences.
Sonya Curry tells all in her book
“Curry tells her story for the first time in Fierce Love, beginning with her childhood in rural Virginia and moving through the peaks and valleys of an incredible life – from raising her immensely gifted but sometimes headstrong children, to becoming an educator and founding a Montessori school, to discovering a profound, life-sustaining spiritual connection to her faith,” reads the book description.
Sonya’s three children have already expressed their love and support for her new endeavor.
“From the beginning, my mom has been a rock of encouragement, faith, discipline, and gratitude for me and my siblings,” said Stephen Curry in a statement.
Seth also mentions their mother’s help when they were kids. “My mom was always the one to challenge us growing up,” says the Brooklyn Nets player, per the press release. “You can see her greatest qualities in each and every one of us.”
Their sister Sydel also added, “I can’t wait for everyone to meet my mom through her powerful story. My mom has been such a pillar for our family.”
