Mick Schumacher’s chances of returning to Formula 1 are looking more promising as Audi prepares to enter the sport. After being let go by the Haas F1 Team about a year and a half ago, Schumacher has remained active in motorsport, serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes and joining Alpine’s World Endurance Championship team. However, his sights are set on a full-time F1 seat, especially with Audi’s recent acquisition of Sauber.
According to Auto Motor Und Sport, under the new leadership of Mattia Binotto, formerly of Ferrari, Audi is reshaping its F1 strategy. Binotto is currently evaluating driver options for the 2025 season, and Schumacher’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate. However, competition for a seat is fierce, and he is among several drivers being considered.
While Schumacher was once seen as a strong fit for Alpine, emerging talents like Jack Doohan have taken the lead for the available seat next to Pierre Gasly. Additionally, despite a good relationship with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, a spot there seems unlikely. Sauber, now under Audi’s ownership, initially appeared to have opportunities for Schumacher but has shifted its focus to other prospects, including rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, who has impressed in Formula 2.
Sauber’s current lineup features Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, making Schumacher’s path back to F1 even more challenging, as both drivers are secure in their positions. Nico Hulkenberg is confirmed for a seat with Audi, and having another German driver could enhance Audi’s branding in the sport. Bottas recently posted a photo of an Audi R8, which has led to speculation about his future, but it remains unclear if this is a serious hint or just a lighthearted post.

The situation is fluid, with many factors at play that could influence Audi’s final decision. While the idea of an all-German lineup featuring Schumacher is appealing, the complexities of the driver market mean that his return to F1 is still uncertain.
