The Boston Red Sox ruined the return of Roansy Contreras to the Pirates rotation, beating Pittsburgh 8-3 on Wednesday at PNC Park.
Contreras gave up four runs over six innings, allowing six hits while walking four. Contreras fell to 3-3 with a 4.02 ERA this season.
“He gutted his way through six innings,” Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. “It just shows he has really good stuff. He was able to navigate his way through a good lineup by manipulating his slider on a night when he was inconsistent with his fastball.”

News broke Tuesday that the Pirates planned to call up Contreras to face the Red Sox on Wednesday.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in early July that the Pirates demoted Contreras to Triple-A Indianapolis. But the club had a good reason why: it wanted to “monitor the innings of their top pitching prospect through a preplanned break.”
