Red Sox lefty Chris Sale played catch for the first time since undergoing surgery on his broken pinkie finger, The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham reported Friday.
The team hopes Sale will pitch again this season.
Sale was struck with a a 106.7 mph line drive comebacker off the bat of Aaron Hicks in the first inning at Yankee Stadium on July 17. He immediately knew it was broken and walked off the fields.

Sale underwent an open reduction and internal fixation of a left fifth finger proximal phalanx fracture at the Newton-Wellesley Outpatient Surgery Center in Wellesley the next day. Dr. Matthew Leibman performed the procedure.
